Proserpine-এর সঙ্গীরা ভয় পেয়ে বিভিন্ন দিকে পালিয়ে গেল। Pluto দ্রুত রথ চালিয়ে চলে গেলেন, কারণ তিনি আশঙ্কা করেছিলেন যে Proserpine-এর মা Ceres খুব শিগগিরই মেয়েকে খুঁজতে সেখানে এসে পৌঁছাবেন।

সন্ধ্যাবেলায় Ceres বাড়ি ফিরে এসে দেখলেন তাঁর মেয়ে Proserpine নেই। সাধারণত Proserpine মাকে দেখার জন্য ছুটে আসত। কিন্তু সেদিন তার কোনো দেখা পাওয়া গেল না। এমন ঘটনা আগে কখনও ঘটেনি।
Ceres অত্যন্ত অবাক ও চিন্তিত হয়ে পড়লেন। তিনি বাড়ির প্রতিটি ঘরে মেয়েকে খুঁজলেন, কিন্তু কোথাও তাকে পাওয়া গেল না।
এরপর Ceres একটি আগ্নেয়গিরির আগুন থেকে মশাল জ্বালিয়ে Proserpine-এর সন্ধানে মাঠ, উপত্যকা এবং আশপাশের জায়গায় ঘুরতে শুরু করলেন।
